Hay fever, allergic rhinitis, perennial rhinitis and chronic sinusitis can all be substantially helped by nNEAP, and probably 80% of patients will become free of symptoms for long periods of time. In asthma, acupuncture relaxes bronchospasm (tight airways) and many patients have very good long term responses. Persistent cough also does well in many cases and usally disappears. nNEAP appears to reduce the swelling and congestion of the membranes lining the nose and sinuses, and also lowers sensitivity to allergens such as dust, pollen, animal hair and fluff, and moulds and house dust mite. For hay fever, 4-6 treatments are usually necessary but the effect normally lasts over 2 or 3 seasons and is often longer lasting still. Improvement is often very fast and some patients will have benefit right from the first treatment. The response in chronic sinusitis is usually very long lasting. Case Study A 6 year old boy was seen with a persistent cough which had been present since birth. It was slowly getting worse, was more noticeable at night (keeping other members of the family awake), but he was not ‘ill’. He had been thoroughly investigated by the local hospital and his parents had been reassured that there was nothing seriously wrong. The first treatment with nNEAP produced no change in his condition, but after 3 more treatments he had lost his cough completely. He was treated again 2 years later because his cough was returning, but then remained symptom free for the next 10 years. |
