Michael Monk is one of very few medically qualified doctors in the UK who have also trained in Osteopathy and Acupuncture. Even more unusual is that he is one of the fewfew doctors practising osteopathy and acupuncture full time, and he has a wealth of experience gained over 30 years in private practice.
He qualified as a doctor from St Marys Hospital Medical School, (now part of Imperial College, London). After a post-registration period in hospital medicine he spent four years in the Royal Navy training and working as a GP before going on to specialise as a Radiologist, first in the Navy and then at St Thomas Hospital, London. He has held consultant posts in the NHS in Radiology.
His work in the NHS led to an interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine, and he went on to study Osteopathy at the London College of Osteopathic Medicine which trains medical doctors in Osteopathy. He later taught there while also practising in Harley Street.
Dr Monk first saw acupuncture being used in Hong Kong, where he was stationed for 2 years in the Navy. He has trained in Acupuncture with some of the worlds leading authorities including Dr Felix Mann and Professor Johannes Bischko. He also studied Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) with Professor Chan Gunn.
He has been in full time private practice in Osteopathy and Acupuncture at Brewers Cottage since 1980. While treating a wide range of problems with acupuncture and osteopathy, Dr Monk has a particular interest in longstanding pain, and pain patterns persisting after operations and where patients have had their pain for months or years. Many patients will have already tried many approaches to try to help their problem with little or no benefit.
He also has a special interest in the treatment of menstrual and infertility problems with acupuncture therapies and has developed an innovative treatment approach using nNEAP, auriculotherapy and MBT.
