Some case studies
Jane was 33 years old and hadn't had a period for 90 days. She and her husband had been trying to conceive for 18 months, and she'd tried 3 courses of treatment with Clomid without any effect. Two days after her second treatment with electroacupuncture she had a normal period. After two more treatments she conceived naturally and had a healthy full term baby 9 months later. Two years later she came back because she was again having difficulty conceiving, and once more she had not had a period for some time. Repeating the same treatment started her periods again and another healthy baby was born nine months later
At 32, Rebecca, had suffered from severe PMT and period pains since puberty, needing heavy duty pain killers at period time and with most periods she was in bed for at least a day. One ovary had been removed when she was 12 because of cysts, and she also had antibodies to her husband's sperm. She and her husband had been trying to conceive for several years and had been through 5 cycles of treatment at Bourn Hall without success. However she came for acupuncture treatment of her severe PMT. Over a few treatments with acupuncture her periods became normal, and she went on to conceive spontaneously within the year.
We saw Sally who was 35 and had extensive endometriosis and a large ovarian cyst. She had been operated on; most of one ovary and most of the endometriosis was removed. She also had a large fibroid (the size of an orange) "sitting on top of the womb". Her husband had a low sperm count. They both had highly pressured jobs and she was especially stressed and anxious. We treated her 6 times in conjunction with an IVF cycle through the NHS. There was a marked reduction in her stress and anxiety during this treatment. She was told at egg collection that the eggs were "much better than expected", but that IVF cycle failed. We continued treatment with a couple more sessions, and she became pregnant spontaneously (without IVF) within 2 months, and went on to have a normal pregnancy and delivery.
Another Sally, who was 33, had been trying to conceive with her husband for 11 years. He was quite a bit older and had a couple of children from a previous marriage. He had had a vasectomy which was reversed successfully. They had had 5 cycles of IVF (4 with ICSI) and all had failed. That was 6 years ago and they had rather given up, until the option of an NHS cycle came up. Sally had some fibroids removed and laser treatment of a patch of endometriosis 14 months ago and had been diagnosed as 'unexplained infertility'. When we first saw her she rated her anxiety about fertility as 10 on a scale of 1-10; she was particularly anxious about Egg Collection and Embryo Transfer which had been very painful in the past. We treated her 4 times in conjunction with her IVF cycle and she found the mindbody techniques very helpful. She was the 'most relaxed I've been' and found EC and ET 'so much better than last time'. We were delighted to hear 2 weeks later that she was pregnant.
